He'd been obedient, her angel, for the most part.
With the exception of that one time when she had told him "Craven! Don't wipe you bloody hands on your brand new jeans!
" and he had looked sideways at her and raised his eyebrows slightly "Watch me"
she always watched him. Her angel. Evangeline's angel. He had her name written on him. She watched every move he made. He couldn't fly.
His wings had long since been broken and were just for looks now, but if she told him to, he could walk on water. And she did tell him. She told him lots of things.
One morning she picked up a stray feather he had somehow lost and mixed her mimosa with it, as if to say "come kiss me" and sure enough he marched right over and obeyed.
Countless times she had yelled "GET A ROOM!
" out the window, and he always knew that what she actually meant was "i miss you and I'm lonely all my myself,
please quit digging in the dirt and come inside" he was the only one who could read her like a book, or maybe he was the only one who cared to.
He knew when she wanted him to start a fire with a single whisper, or call a wolf out from the woods with a low whistle.
All she had to do was snap her fingers and say "lightning bugs!" and he would smile and nod, and a second later they would be surrounded by a thousand blinking lights.
Although she knew full well that he had no power aside from her, that he never could call a summer rain storm without her asking first, she still was in awe of him,
she believed he could do anything! But she never thought that one day it all might stop. that her words might not reach his ears.
how could this have happened? How did the demons, the darkness somehow creep through the cracks? How could she turn it around?
she could still hear their accusations though they were now gone. Could still hear them breathing. But she couldn't hear craven breathing. She had to fix this.
It was up to her and her alone, she knew it.
She wiped her eyes, and punched his limp arm.
"Aren't you supposed to be immortal?" she asked, her sobs catching in her throat.
She tried thinking things through again. "if I'm in control, whats most important is if i believe in myself, right?"
she lay down curled next to him, sticking her nose under his jaw.
"so i need to believe that i have the power to speak him back? That if i say breathe, he has to! I just have to believe in myself" she whispered it to him
he didn't obey.
But someday... Someday he would.
And when that day came, she was going to tell him to get a room
