Something I wrote for my mother, came to me half asleep one night and I had to write it down.

When I was one you taught me to talk, When I was two you showed me how to walk, When I was three you pushed my pram When I was four you held my hand.

When I was five you kissed my bruises, When I was six you heard my excuses, When I was seven you taught me to paint, When I was eight you showed me restraint.

When I was nine you guided me, When I was ten you helped me see, When I was eleven you gave me advice, When I was twelve you told me to think twice.

When I was thirteen you had patience, When I was fourteen you helped with my education, When I was fifteen I screamed and shouted, When I was sixteen I saw that you doubted.

When I was seventeen I tried to atone, When I was eighteen I left home, When I was nineteen I thought I knew better, When I was twenty I gained my scarlet letter.

When I was twenty-one you wiped my tears, When I was twenty-two you settled my fears, When I was twenty-three you guided my vision, Now I'm twenty-four you're helping me make decisions.
