The Hitchhiker

The sky became a tangerine orange as a small, rickety, rusty truck pulled up next to a wandering traveler.

Even though the surrounding area was growing creepier by the second with nothing but sketchy forests around, the silver-haired driver didn't hesitate to check on the wanderer.

"Hey, you okay out here?" she asked after rolling down the passenger window, the boy stopping when she did.

"The next town's pretty far, tens of miles away, and there's nothing but trees and a couple of cabins out here. You need a ride?"

As the woman stared into the boy's one eye, the other being covered by black hair, she could see utter despair in him, the type of bad event that sticks with someone for a while.

While the boy delayed his answer, leaves and bushes rustled as if trying to say something.

"Yes, I do need a ride." Upon his answer, the slim woman reached over to open the door for the stranger. After he was in clear sight, the driver wasn't really fazed by how he appeared.

Her passenger's casual clothes were rough and rotten, covered in blood from the multiple scrapes on his body. As soon as he closed the door, his stench overtook the flowery truck insides.

The truck began to move after the woman examined the boy.

"So, where are you trying to go? Maybe the police?" The woman inquired, her hand twitching on the wheel. Just like she thought, the boy was quiet at first.

"No, not the police. I just need to get away."

"Away from the people who did that to you?"

"Yes." The boy's response made the lady go quiet for a second.

"Why not go to the police? Are those people that great at doing their job?"

"They are. The police won't help, really. I've tried already. Plus, I haven't seen all of their faces."

"Well, did you give those people a reason to mess with you?"

"None at all. They came to me of their own free will, wanting me for their own personal reasons. I was just a normal high school student before this."

The woman took many curved turns through the woods as they conversed. "Do you think they'll really stop if you get away far enough?"

"No, but it's the best I can do. When they come for me again, I'll be ready next time."

"Is that so? You don't really have much muscle on you."

The victim's arms were smooth like a clean marble counter when the woman looked. "I'll get by somehow."

Once it was finally dark, the truck pulled into the next town's hospital parking lot.

"Thank you for taking me this far. It means a lot to me."

For the first time, the boy smiled at his driver, making the woman's body twitch with blush in her cheeks.

"I-It's no problem. Are you sure you don't want me to go in with you?"

"No, I'm fine. I'll deal with the rest alone." The mysterious boy climbed out of the truck and closed the door behind him.

"It was nice meeting you, P-"

"Phillip. My name is Phillip."

"It was nice meeting you, Phillip. I'm Mabel."

The woman reached out of her passenger window for a handshake goodbye. She shook the boy's dirty hand and couldn't help smiling as she did.

However, she didn't know what kind of smile she was giving off. She tried smiling normally, but it didn't work.

To Phillip, she wore a creepy, open, sinister smile, making him let go and almost vomit.

"See you around, Phillip.

" As the silver-haired lady drove off in her loud truck, Phillip couldn't help but hold his mouth as he hurried into the hospital, realizing that Mabel could have been one of his tormentors.
