Better Off The alarm goes off, and Jasmine jumps out of bed as if someone had startled her. She immediately rushes to the bathroom to brush her teeth, but finds the door locked as her brother is taking a shower. “Hurry up!” Jasmine yells. Her brother ignores her. She gets dressed and heads to her mother’s bathroom to brush her teeth. Jasmine is about 5’6 with beautiful features, big brown eyes, long curly black hair and a smile that is contagious. “Why are you in such a rush anyway? You’re never up this early, plus it’s Saturday” her brother said. Her brother Jose is as tall and muscular as their late father. He is opposite of Jasmine, outgoing, careless and popular. Jasmine is pretty reserved and though she’s not as popular as her brother she is content with the number of friends she has. Her best friends Mariah, Jennifer and Gabi have always been by Jasmine’s side since they first met in daycare. “I have to work today” Jasmine said. “Oh, that’s right. Hey, whatever happened to your acting classes-“, “I have to go, or I’ll be late. Hey can you let mom know I’ll be in late.” Jasmine kissed her brother on the cheek and ran out the door. Gabi pulled up just on time, “Hey Jaz” Gabi said without making eye contact as she was busy catching up on the latest Instagram post. “Hey Gabs, let’s go you know I can’t be late and this traffic is a killer.” Jasmine was egger to get to work before her manager Carmen, out of all the employees Jasmine was her least favorite. It could be because Jasmine is full of youth, she was naturally a gorgeous girl that snatched the attention of almost every guy she’s come across. Carmen is in her late 30’s working as a retail manger, she’s bitter because she had envisioned a different life for herself. Carmen surprises Jasmine, “You’re late Smith”, Carmen had referred to all her employees by their last name. “I know, I’m sorry and I promise it won’t happen again”. “Well you know I don’t usually agree with you Jasmine, but you are right. It won’t happen again because you no longer will be coming in period.” Jasmine being the prideful person that she is decided to just leave with no hesitation. She grabs her phone to call Gabi and in 8 mins Gabi pulls up, “Yo, what happened? You wanna call Mariah and Jennifer and meet her outside later”, Unlike Jasmine Gabi was always ready for a showdown. “Nah, I’m good’ Jasmine said. she was already looking for the next position to fill on her cell phone. “Aight, cause you know we got you. And you know I’m always ready to throw these hands.” Gabi said with an attitude as if Jasmine didn’t know. Jasmine laughs,“Yeah I know, I’m good. They weren’t paying good anyway. Plus, Carmen was mad sus.”- Gabi’s phone rings, It’s Mariah on the other end. Mariah is known to be loud and very outspoken. People that do not know her personally assume she’s always mad. “Ask Jasmine where’s the party tonight? And tell her she can’t ditch us tonight, it’s not she has a job to go to in the morning.” Gabi laughs. Jasmine gives Gabi the death stare as she knows that it was her that told her the news. “How did you even have time to tell Mariah?!”. “It’s called voice text.-” “Man whatever! I’m not going anywhere tonight. I have to start seriously looking for another job. You guys know I have to help my mom with the bills.” Gabi drops off Jasmine and drives off. The lights had been off in the house and Jasmine expected to be the only one home. She turns on the lights and sees her mother on the couch, next to a bottle of wine. “Hey mom..” Jasmine said nervously. Jasmine’s mother Sabrina had been battling with depression since the killing of her late husband. “Hey mine, I thought your brother mentioned you were coming home late?”. “I was out but decided to come back home a little early.” Jasmine was not ready to tell her mother that she had been fired. “Ok mine. Well, you’ll have to order some food for yourself since I didn’t expect you to be here and your brother left for the weekend so I didn’t bother cooking.” Jasmine nodded ok and went upstairs to her room. She’s faced with a picture of her father. She grabs the picture and sits on the edge of her bed. “I miss you so much dad. If you were here things would be so different. You believed in all my dreams. I pray I make you proud.” Jasmine had aspirations of becoming an actress, ever since she acted in her fist school play. She recalls that day and sees the image of her father in the audience. Her father Johnny was a family man that gave his children everything he didn’t have growing up. Her father and mother were high school sweethearts and Jasmine measured every guy she ever dated next to her father, but none of them came close. Jasmine was twenty-five and started to lose hope on her fairytale. “Hey mine” it had been Jasmine’s brother that had given her the nickname “mine”, the nickname was created because he couldn’t pronounce “Jasmine” as a child. “There’s some uber coupons on the table”. “ok mom thanks.” Jasmine decided to just order from a local pizza restaurant instead. The doorbell rings and Jasmine rushes downstairs to open the door as she had placed the order an hour ago. She opens the door and sees a tall White American man with gleaming blue eyes. He greets her with a smile and she can’t help but smile back. He hands her the pizza and says, “Hi, my name is Ethan and I am the owner of Perfect Pizzeria I’m so sorry about your order. My deliver guy quit on me today and I have no one to help deliver the pizza-. Jasmine interrupts, “it’s ok. Things happen”. She opens the box of pizza, grabs a slice and takes a bite. Ethan smiles and says, “ok..I..I really do appreciate your understanding. In fact your next order is on me, but in order to make that happen you must give me your number.” Without hesitation Jasmine gives Ethan her number, and closes the door. She turns her back, leans against the door and smirks. She’s never met anyone that good looking before. And deep down, she’d hope for him to call. The next day Jasmine accompanies Jennifer to the mall. A cell tone goes off and Jasmine reaches for her phone. It’s a text from an unknown number..”Hello, it’s Ethan I know you had pizza yesterday but if you’re in the area today you are welcome to stop by. Free of charge ” Jasmine reads the text and smiles. She doesn’t respond and tells Jennifer she has to go, “hey I gotta go, my mom wants me to pick up dinner. Jennifer said ok and mentioned to Jasmine that there is an upcoming acting workshop that she should attend. Jasmine tells her ok and that she’d call her later. She takes a taxi and right before the taxi stops in front of the pizzeria she looks at her reflection on her cell phone to ensure she didn’t have anything embarrassing on her face. Jasmine opens the door to Ethan’s shop and is instantly greeted by his smile “Hello Jasmine”. “Hey Ethan”. It’s no secret Ethan was smitten by Jasmine; her beautiful exotic features were captivating. “Well as promised you may select whatever type of pizza you desire.” Jasmine looks at the menu and reads, “Chicken and waffles”. She laughs, “What do YOU know about chicken and waffles?”. Ethan smirks, “Oh I probably know more than YOU do. Well actually as I am sure you have probably guessed already I am not from here. I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. In fact, my family still lives there.” Jasmine surprises him as well by telling him that she used to live in Atlanta as well. “Really?! Now that I would’ve never guessed!” Ethan says. They both laugh. Jasmine orders her usual and Ethan lets her try his famous chicken and waffles. Throughout the night they engage in conversation and laugher. And before they knew it the night turned into early morning. Jasmine and Ethan had been inseparable since the night they first met. They created a bond that neither of them have ever felt. He is just as caring as her father was and Jasmine had been someone Ethan had been missing. Ethan gave Jasmine the drive and ambition that was missing since the passing of her father. She started to focus on the dream she once had, becoming an actress. She became more outgoing and become friends with all of Ethan’s friends and loved them just as he did. Everyone close to Jasmine had noticed the change in her and automatically accepted Ethan as a part of the family. Though Jasmine had not forgotten her father, she started to feel like she was truly living live all thanks to this new profound love. Ethan was the black sheep of his family and Jasmine helped him rekindle the relationship with his father as she made it known that he should cherish the moments he has with him. Ethan decided that he would ask Jasmine for her hand in marriage. In rekindling his relationship with his father he decided that he’d take Jasmine and her family down to Atlanta for the weekend. Ethan and Jasmine would land in Atlanta before the rest of her family. They rented a car and headed to Ethan’s parents’ house. Jasmine looks outside of the window while passing through the fall, thinking about her father not being here to witness her happiness. She smiles at the thought of him looking down from heaven. “We’re here babe” Ethan says. Jasmine notices a police car in the drive way. “Why is there a police car in your parents drive way?” Jasmine asks. “My father is a police officer. I thought I told you?”. Jasmine starts to get nervous, “Will they like me? - “Babe they will love you because I love you.” They walk up to the door. Ethan takes a deep breath turns to Jasmine and ask, “Are you ready?” Jasmine smiles as she squeezes his hand in excitement. Ethan gives the door one big knock; Ethan’s father opens the door. Suddenly Jasmine is faced with her father’s killer.
