A daily reminder on grief.

House of Memories

Approaching the daunting entryway to the building,

I took a deep breath.

Another day was coming to an end,

Another day was coming to an end, yet the past still seemed impossibly close.

The haunting jingle of keys echoed through the house,

The haunting jingle of keys echoed through the house, a not-so-timely reminder of events long gone,

of the ever so vacant rooms.

A cursory glance to the pale daybed was inevitable,

A cursory glance to the pale daybed was inevitable, yet still as unwelcome as always.

Eyes squeezed shut,

Eyes squeezed shut, futile in vanishing the incoming vision,

Eyes squeezed shut, futile in vanishing the incoming vision, only serving to make it more vivid.

As if mocking me,

flashes of two individuals came back

sprawled across the couch,

hands intertwined.

One leaning into the other,

One leaning into the other, the other staring intently back.

The emotions that came with such

almost came washing in.

I managed to slam the dam back in place,

I managed to slam the dam back in place, holding them back for now.

A peek through slotted eyes however,

A peek through slotted eyes however, brought attention to the cluttered island,

A peek through slotted eyes however, brought attention to the cluttered island, speckled with dust;

A peek through slotted eyes however, brought attention to the cluttered island, speckled with dust; evidence of it's old caretaker,

long departed.

As I stumbled past the empty shelves

As I stumbled past the empty shelves that alluded to something that used to be;

I barely managed to make it to the bedroom

before a thud could be heard,

as I hit the floor.

Yet another day gone, left thinking

of things not meant to be.
