Idk why I am so excited by this poem but I AM OH MY. Thank you for reading, a love poem but in the wrong order. (Meant to be spoken word.) <3

seven goodbye notes in the wrong order

Seven

Finding metaphors to describe the way you looked that night

Finding metaphors to describe the way you looked that night is pulling teeth

Finding metaphors to describe the way you looked that night is pulling teeth and washing away the guilt with a mouthful of blood.

Finding metaphors to describe the way you looked that night is pulling teeth and washing away the guilt with a mouthful of blood. You would have thought I'd be used to the taste by now.

Five

My mother said women are the strongest in hard times.

Maybe she meant it monthly,

Maybe she meant it monthly, the shame that comes with hiding red nickels

Maybe she meant it monthly, the shame that comes with hiding red nickels like we're caught in the midst of a crime scene,

Maybe she meant it monthly, the shame that comes with hiding red nickels like we're caught in the midst of a crime scene, hanging up bedding to dry.

You would have thought I was a trophy with how clean you kept me.

Three

Poems come naturally on the roof,

Poems come naturally on the roof, words strung together in a pity party.

You were my favourite mess,

You were my favourite mess, I mean muse,

You were my favourite mess, I mean muse, I mean miss me even when my bags are already halfway across the city

You were my favourite mess, I mean muse, I mean miss me even when my bags are already halfway across the city and all that is left to pick up is my feet

and why are the hardest things to leave,

and why are the hardest things to leave, the ones that have already stayed?

Six

When I said I loved my name on your lips,

When I said I loved my name on your lips, I meant I loved the way the syllables ran from your tongue too

When I said I loved my name on your lips, I meant I loved the way the syllables ran from your tongue too as if we both know a predator when we see one.

I was never any good at running.

I was never any good at running. I found myself falling forward instead.

Cliches don't make the best endings,

Cliches don't make the best endings, beginnings

Cliches don't make the best endings, beginnings or fill the middle past stomach cramps.

Four

In school I was voted 'most likely to love something beyond repair'.

I didn't know if that was a compliment then

I didn't know if that was a compliment then or if years of gluing butterfly wings together had left me soft.

You were another broken thing.

You were another broken thing. I had sticky hands and you,

You were another broken thing. I had sticky hands and you, a traffic light grin.

Did I ever learn to see past amber?

Two

I’m not a morning person

I’m not a morning person but your texts flutter my stomach

I’m not a morning person but your texts flutter my stomach like I’ve swallowed whole a flock of birds

I’m not a morning person but your texts flutter my stomach like I’ve swallowed whole a flock of birds and for days,

I cough up feathers when you wish me a good morning.

One

We've been texting for two weeks now.

Every time another reply comes through,

Every time another reply comes through, I dig my nails into the blue of my thighs,

Every time another reply comes through, I dig my nails into the blue of my thighs, dragging this moment to last.

You would have thought this was a crime scene,

You would have thought this was a crime scene, the way you kept me on my toes.

For those of you who don't know now, spoken word poetry is my dream to perform. And this is the most I've liked a poem since I began writing. Anyway, hope you enjoyed! I would love to perform this one day, but people who know me would know I don't have a phone so alas, life is difficult. *sigh*

But I will find a way in the future! Much love xx
