A poem about reclaiming identity, inspired by my own experiences as a Pakistani girl. :) Thank you for reading! <3

brown girl

I have a poetry book in the works and I realised that a lot of things I write about are based on my religion, identity, family and experiences as a brown girl of Pakistani descent living in a place like the UK.

While I've always seen the UK as home, my family have always instilled in me a deep pride for our roots. Even when we've recieved backlash for it.

So I don't mind if all I write about is that if I remember that all in all, I'm just a brown girl who likes to write. :) A poem about identity in a modern world, (I'll leave the meaning of some words at the end. :P)

You're a brown girl until pink clashes against your skin.

You're a brown girl until pink clashes against your skin. The cellulite becomes borders that are too deep to cross.

Your friends hide behind wheelie bins and don't kiss and tell

Your friends hide behind wheelie bins and don't kiss and tell but you still have an unfinished language between your teeth

Your friends hide behind wheelie bins and don't kiss and tell but you still have an unfinished language between your teeth and your dada stares as if the partition is holding an arm

Your friends hide behind wheelie bins and don't kiss and tell but you still have an unfinished language between your teeth and your dada stares as if the partition is holding an arm against his throat.

At the airport, there is no time to claim your baggage,

At the airport, there is no time to claim your baggage, god will keep your prayers silent.

At the airport, there is no time to claim your baggage, god will keep your prayers silent. In fact, he will take them all.

At the airport, there is no time to claim your baggage, god will keep your prayers silent. In fact, he will take them all. You will need them.

Walk past the conveyor belt,

Walk past the conveyor belt, because alhamdulillah,

Walk past the conveyor belt, because alhamdulillah, your hijab is a call to war

Walk past the conveyor belt, because alhamdulillah, your hijab is a call to war and airport security just can't resist one more background check.

You wish them eid prayer and no shoes.

You wish them a cupboard full of plastic containers

You wish them a cupboard full of plastic containers and your ammi still sends you down the street to collect them from neighbours

You wish them a cupboard full of plastic containers and your ammi still sends you down the street to collect them from neighbours like a handful of sticky dates.

You wish them naan bread

You wish them naan bread and garlic

You wish them naan bread and garlic and mangoes,

You wish them naan bread and garlic and mangoes, pockets of gold

You wish them naan bread and garlic and mangoes, pockets of gold and moons

You wish them naan bread and garlic and mangoes, pockets of gold and moons upon moons.

You wish them naan bread and garlic and mangoes, pockets of gold and moons upon moons. Never an open casket,

You wish them naan bread and garlic and mangoes, pockets of gold and moons upon moons. Never an open casket, where no one comes forth to claim their country.

You do not wish them to hold their heart in their fists passing someone down the street.

You do not wish them to hold their heart in their fists passing someone down the street. You do not hope they stand behind the bathroom sink in an airport and rub the soil out their skin.

You do not wish them to be nothing more

You do not wish them to be nothing more than a paki.

You do not wish them to be nothing more than a paki. Terrorist because you can't walk past a whole torso of flowers without tearing an organ.

That daffodil that stays pressed between a photo album.

That photo album is the last thing your ancestors grabbed before they too,

That photo album is the last thing your ancestors grabbed before they too, left.

Dada- Urdu word for 'grandfather'. Ammi- Urdu word for 'mother'. Alhamdulillah- means 'praise be to God'. Paki- racial slur against someone of Pakistani descent. Hijab- head covering worn by some Muslim women.
