For my dad

Becoming Dad

by hopehill

You didn't know I'd be your daughter You didn't know when I was born

You didn't know I'd need a father You'd never met me before

I was fourteen when you met me And oh, how I'd been hurt

Those prior years had broken me Ground my dreams into the dirt

You saw me at my worst Long before you saw my best

All those homes they said were mine Had an expiration date I guess

I was tired of being abandoned By people who promised to love and protect me

You chose to be my dad You chose to keep me

You became my dad when you opened the door And let a small angry teen into you heart and home

I wanted to say thank you So I thought I'd write a poem

@bernardtwindwil Thanks. My parents did something not many can; agree to raise a bunch of kids they barely knew and love them as if they'd known them from birth.

This was beautiful. It is wonderful that you not only recognized what this good man did for you but that you gave public recognition. Great post!!!!
