Euan squeezed his eyes closed. Beads of sweat trickled down his forehead. His heart pounded against his rib cage. The room was dark and his eyes were closed but he knew she was there.
She was always there.
He felt cold air on his face. A putrid smell shot up his nose, drawing vomit up his throat but he managed to hold it down.
The cold air moved to his ear and he heard a light groan, followed by a high pitched scream.
"No, leave me alone," Euan shouted. "Please, leave me alone."
A hand gripped around his neck and squeezed. He felt the air draw out of his lungs. "You want me to leave you like you left me to die," she screamed.
As the last of the oxygen left his body, he opened his bloodshot eyes and looked at the decaying face floating over him. She tightened her grip so hard an eye popped out her socket which was filled with maggots.
"Euan, Euan, wake up, wake up," Euan's girlfriend said, shaking him. He opened his eyes and gasped for air.
Sunlight was sneaking through a gap in the curtains and he realised he'd survived another night.
"This is the fifth night in a row you've stopped breathing in your sleep Euan, you need to see a doctor right away. Please."
Euan looked into her loving eyes but knew a doctor couldn't help him.
But how could he admit to her he saw a woman being beaten to death and done nothing to help her and now she haunted his sleep and tried to kill him?
"I'll call the doctor," he said.
