WARNING: The following story (maybe not this chapter, but you'll never know) contains major cliffhangers. This novel is also written by a sleep-deprived teen who doesn't know if their words make sense or not, so if you experience some cringe or confusion, then there's an excuse for it. But besides that, enjoy the story!
~Time Period: Present (Covid didn't exist AU)~ Chop knocked on the door of the large house in front of her, a huge grin on her face. She was carrying a shoebox, but there wasn't a pair of shoes inside of it. The door opened up, revealing a girl with long red-brown hair and hazel eyes.
The girl stared at the box Chop was holding in confusion. "Are these for Elliott?" she asked, knowing that the gold haired teen loved to run. Chop shook her head. "No, this is something else. Just let me in, Anna! I don't want other people to see what's in here." Anna raised her eyebrow, but opened the door more, allowing the energetic redhead in.
Chop immediately ran into Anna's room, startling Elliott, Andy, and Shifa, who were already there. "Holy shiznak, you scared me!" Shifa chuckled. Andy groaned dramatically at this. "Chop's the only other person I know who says 'shiznak.' She's rubbing off on you Shifa," Andy sighed. "I thought one Chop was enough, but two would be a nightmare..."
"Oh shut up, I'm not that bad," Chop rolled her eyes, but a grin tugged at the corner of her lips. "As much as we all love complaining about you, Chop, I don't think that's why you're here so early," Elliott said. The redheaded girl stared at her friend blankly for a moment before remembering. "OH! Yeah, I remember now. I found this in the library." She showed them the shoebox, and they looked at it curiously.
Anna, who came into her room a few seconds after Chop did, grabbed the box and opened it, revealing a dusty, ancient-looking book. "I've seen this before!" Anna exclaimed in surprise. "It's weird how you found it...whenever I see it, it's always on a different shelf, and even if I blink, it just disappears!"
"The book probably hates you then," Chop reasoned. Andy took the book from Anna and wiped some of the dust off. She gasped when she saw some of the symbols on it. "Woah...Chop, this isn't just some book in the library. This is the Gátt." "The what now?" Shifa asked in confusion.
"The Gátt," Andy repeated, her grey eyes widening in awe and excitement. "It's said to be one of the most ancient books in the entire world! Legend has it that there's even cursed magic in here." "And how do you know all this?" Anna asked, a bit offended that as the smartest person in the group, even she didn't know what the Gátt was.
"My dad's an archeologist," Andy explained, taking more dust off of the book. "Isn't that the study of dinosaurs?" Chop questioned, confusion quite visible on her face. "That's a paleontologist Chop," Elliott sighed. "An archeologist is a person who studies ancient artifacts."
"Since when did everyone start developing brain cells and knew stuff?!" Anna said, shocked. "I thought I was the only one that even had a brain!" "I do have a brain cell!" Shifa protested. "It just bounces around in my skull like a Windows screen saver." "Same!" Chop said, high-fiving Shifa.
"I think you're still the smartest one here Anna," Andy said, amused. Chop grabbed the book again. It was bound tightly together by an old leather belt, the gold runes on the cover shone dimly. "We need to open this," she said.
"Wait! Didn't Andy say there was cursed magic to this thing?" Shifa asked. "Yeah," Chop nodded. "And you're wanting us to open it." "Well obviously. What else would we do?" Chop questioned.
Shifa grinned. "This is why we're best friends." "Opening that thing up is probably a bad idea," Anna said. "Bad ideas are the best ideas," Chop retorted, taking the leather binding off. The 5 teens stared at the book expectantly, waiting for a reaction. Nothing happened.
"Well that was a waste of time," Chop said, disappointed. Elliott frowned at the book, but then touched it. As soon as her fingers brushed against the ancient book, the golden runes shone brightly and the book levitated in the air. Anna, Andy, and Shifa jumped when they heard voices start to whisper in a foreign language that even Anna didn't know of.
"What's happening???" Shifa asked, not liking how the voices seemed to be getting louder. Andy stared at the book in horror. "The curse was activated..." she murmured. "WHAT?!" Chop yelled over the voices. Before Andy could repeat herself, the book opened up, revealing a ball of energy that floated in the air.
Before she could say anything, Shifa found herself being sucked into the energy (you know, like Jumanji? That's kind of what's happening right now). "Shifa!" Chop exclaimed, running through the energy, attempting to get her best friend back. What happened instead was that the redheaded teen was also sucked into the energy.
Next to follow was Andy and Anna, who both were clinging onto bookshelves, trying to not get trapped within the mysterious orb. That plan backfired miserably, however, because they eventually ended up inside it. Only Elliott remained. She tried to close the book without getting too close to the orb, but she failed as the magical entity sucked her up as well.
After Elliott disappeared, the orb vanished, and the book snapped shut again, but this time the runes said something in English: 'Ͳհҽ çմɾʂҽ çąղ օղӀվ ҍҽ ҍɾօҟҽղ ահҽղ էհҽ ҽղժ օƒ էհҽ ʂէօɾվ հąʂ ƒìղąӀӀվ ҍҽҽղ ʂքօҟҽղ...'
I hope you guys enjoyed chapter 1! I'll write chapter 2 over the winter break, and that's when more of the characters start to come in. :) Until next time! ~ Artemis
