The Monster

Mara's feet pounded the pavement, she had been running for hours. Her heart was pounding and her long dark hair was flying out behind her in a snarled mess.

She sneaked a quick glance behind her and saw that the creature was closer than ever.

It was slowly gaining on her, Mara had felt herself slowing down over the past hours and she pushed on harder. At one point she knew she was going to have to stop, it would catch her. It.

A monster that didn't look like a monster, it was a black cloud of smoke, sparks flying out of its center. It never slowed down, it just kept gaining on her.

Mara's legs ached, her throat felt like fire. Everything hurt, she wondered why she kept running. The monster would eventually take her, it would kill her, she was sure of that.

She was running because she wanted to live, that was why. The will to live was naturally strong in any human, but the humans never stopped to wonder why they wanted to live.

Why keep fighting when everything hurt, and you knew you would die in the end. There wasn't a reason to keep fighting, to keep running.

So she stopped. For a moment the monster was confused, it didn't meet very many humans who had lost their will to live. But it came to its senses.

Mara felt the uncomfortably warm hands of the monster. The hands took her, pulled her into himself. And she was gone, she felt no pain, and would never feel any ever again.
