This was the first time I talked to him.

Peanut m&ms

by embry

I walked passed the vending machine

Peered into the brightly lit glass. Saw a package of m&ms and rummaged for change in my bag.

Only had a 5 dollar bill

I looked around the science hall and there you were. Drinking from the water fountain. I had seen your face around school before.

I was not shy

"Hey, you friends with Carlos?" I said in an awkwardly high pitched tone.

You turned to me

Your eyebrows raised, "Yeah he is a friend of mine."

"Well listen, friend of Carlos,"

"I really want to buy this package of peanut m&ms but I don't have the correct amount of change. Could I get change for a five?"

You pulled out your wallet to check

You said to me, " I don't have change for five, but here, just take this dollar."

I looked down at your hand holding out a crinkly, faded, one

After handing it to me you walked away.

I turned back to face the vending machine

I inserted the bill and pressed F2. Then out came two fresh packages of peanut m&ms. I stared at the yellow packages and wondered where you'd gone.

I walked out of the science buliding to find you

You were sitting on the bench beside the wall. I walked over to you.

You looked up at me

You looked surprised as i stared at you and held my hand out with a bright yellow bag.

I said, "The machine is broken and gave me two packages, here is yours, thank you for the dollar."

I walked away before you could respond

Now when i think of peanut m&ms, I think of you.
