Read me, she said, as you would this book
My skin is smooth and soft as this velvet cover,
Yet there are words traced like poetry over my flesh
Trace them with your fingertips, read where I have been
How life has etched itself upon me.
My spine is strong, but don't break it with thoughtlessness,
Turn each page tenderly, for they may cut careless hands.
Each chapter I have lived,
Each has been pulled from my bones,
If you would know me, my love, then read me.
This passage here, yes, it hurts to read those words
I broke living them, they changed how I smile,
And the quality of my laughter...
Please do not neglect them.
Breathe me in, I am scented, perfumed paper
A love letter to you, soft as a rose.
See the colour of the rhymes that fall from my lips,
Hear the music in the rhythm of my words.
There is light in your face, the Moon in my eyes,
And outside the Night is still, waiting.
You asked me, my love, how best to know me?
Hold me close,
Read me like a secret, like a song,
Read me, she said, as you would this book.
