(yes friends I'm still alive)
This is the USC Wrigley Institute on Catalina Island, CA.
My current home and where I'm learning about nature, conservation, and sustainability for four months.
Every morning I hike and watch the sun rise over the ocean.
Well, every morning before I started sleeping in. :|
I'm in class with these excellent people!
Picture from day one: small but mighty, with our first of four professors, Jill Sohm, on the right.
... and class is actually pretty great.
I'm taking Sustainable Fisheries Management, Conservation Biology, and Marine Biology - all interesting with no Gen Eds. Classes are fast paced with lots of discussion and fun field activities.
I'm also doing a research project.
Sometimes it's fun, sometimes it's tedious, sometimes I've been indoors with tiny bottles of algae for hours and feel like I'm slowly dying (it's worth it for the data and the cool machines!)
I live in a dorm and it's ... beautiful.
+ the dining hall chefs are magical unicorns. On a related note, I am happy to report that I am no longer subsisting on coffee and potato chips.
I finally have time to draw, read, take photos...
SO MANY HOBBIES!
I also hike a lot in my free time.
And I can kayak and snorkel in the ocean whenever I want.
Fun fact: Catalina Island is covered in cacti.
Bison wander through campus a few times a week.
We thought this one was going to charge at us, but he just needed to lick his butt.
Sometimes you can see dolphins from the boat coming here!
THERE'S A CAT COLONY ON THE ISLAND!!!!
If you don't know how much I love cats we have probably never spoken once.
... that one time I saw whales.
It's beautiful whatever the weather is like.
There are so many stars at night.
tl;dr It's great.
and a much needed break, I'll be back in the fall. Come visit me if you have time!
