I visited Germany two years ago today. I miss it sometimes, so I wrote a poem about a life I could have lived if I had stayed.

Nostalgia for a Life I Never Lived

It tasted like kinderpunsch,

The sweet cider of my childhood in Germany

It tasted like the gummy bears from my hometown

A plastic bag I bought with my own saved euros.

One token handed over for a carousel ride at the Christmas Market

Ice skating

Whipping around the rink with my friends

And then taking the train home at night, away from the bustling city

To be tucked into bed

With a sweet kiss

From my mother
