(Reddit writing prompt) Having asked you to return early from your month-long vacation, the Captain pulls you into his office. With a worried look, he hands you a folder highlighting a string of unsolved murders, some dating back several weeks. "Do you know the Muffin Man?"

Do You Know the Muffin Man?

"The Muffin Man?", a shocked Detective Jones replied. "Yes, The Muffin Man! Our investigation has placed you with the criminal codenamed Muffin Man."

Detective Jones sat down at the chair in front of the Captains desk. He gave the captain a pitying look. "Sir?", he replied softly." The Muffin Man doesn't exist.

He's like James Bond or Norman Bates, simply exaggerated fact turned into fiction.

The academy taught us that during the 80's, there was a supposed criminal called the Muffin Man, but that it was just a story.

The infamous "murderer" was somehow able to get into a house without force and kill victims a different way each time, but no connection was ever found or proven.

" Jones laughed, "The media combined some true stories and urban legends from that decade, and they became the Muffin Man myth. He doesn't exist.

It's probably some guy obsessed with the fairy tale."

The Captain laughed cruelly, "Boy! The Muffin Man is as real as you and I are, and you have been seen with the suspect on multiple occasions.

I am going to give you one last chance to come clean before I call the men in here to arrest you. What do you have to say for yourself?"

Jones didn't know what to do. Should he ask for a lawyer? The Captain obviously was convinced he was guilty, so he decided maybe it was best if he remained silent.

"I have in my hands photo evidence, phone calls, and emails that place you with this criminal." The Captain said as he reached inside the folder and slammed a large photo down on the table.

The detective started laughing. He felt like he could finally breathe again. "Sir this is impossible. Someone upstairs made a mistake.

That isn't a criminal, it's my mother! She's a good catholic woman, and a well respected member of my hometown."

The Captain shook his head. "So you admit you know the suspect? We have eye-witnesses putting you at and near the crime scenes that span over 30 years.

You moved around quite a bit as a child andyoung adult didn't you? I'm sure you were in on it from an early age, and we have all the proof we need. It's no wonder you became a detective.

It's a perfect way to help your partner cover up her crimes."

"We have all that we need sir" a voice stated from the door. "Good", The captain replied, "Take him away. This man has been hiding a criminal and obstructing justice."

Three officers took away the hysterical detective away. He fought them, but was easily subdued.

After the office returned to it's normal hushed state, the Captain called his superior on the phone. "The Muffin Man case is almost closed. We have found her, and she will soon be taken care of.

Those she murdered and their families will have justice."
