Making Friends With The Devil Part 6

Megan had no idea what to expect when the door finally slid open. A torture chamber? One of those weird sex rooms?

Instead, the room was almost normal looking. Almost.

It was a spacious rectangular shaped room, lit up with small wall lamps and a dimly lit, light that was a dark shade of red.

The red light was off to the back end of the room, lighting up a long countertop. There were various pictures strung out all over the counter and all over the wall to the right.

The walls were painted a dark purple, but when Annabelle spoke, the wall lit up, in an almost extraterrestrial way.

"This is quite the hideout." Megan said, looking around with wide eyes.

"Yeah, it's nice...so anyways, going back to earlier..." his voice trailed off.

The air grew tighter. Luke started to feel insecure. What was Megan thinking now? Pictures of her were all over this room. ....Sure, there were other people too....

But they didn't come close to outnumbering her photos.

Apparently she didn't realize her face was the face plastered on the wall and covering the counter top, until something caught her eye. She approached the wall cautiously.

"Why is it so dark in here?" she asked, squinting.

"He likes it that way." Annabelle's voice was sarcastic, as she brightened the lights.

"Oh, uh-thanks, Annabelle." Megan said.

"Holy shit. These are some seriously awful photos of me. Wow. I vote we burn these. All of them."

Luke wasn't sure how to respond to her. Why wasn't she more upset with him? Why didn't she ask him why her photos were covering his room?

"That's a matter of opinion. I don't believe I've ever taken a single "bad photo" of you. Aren't you going to ask me why I have all this?"

"No. I already know why."

"You do?" Luke was shocked. How could any of it have been found out?

"Of course I do. Do you think my husband is a smart man? The woman at the cleaners found an index card in his suit one day not too long ago..."

"You want to know what that card said? It said, 'Don't forget to do this shit-Meet Lucas Black about getting rid of Meg. (chinatown?) Call Mom about rescheduling dinner. Pick up new suit for next week.'"

"Aside from that, I've known you have been following me. I mean, really, how could I not know? You drove a rotation of 4 vehicles, you always appeared the same in your attire..."

"Anyone would eventually start to notice the same person always, conveniently, in the same place. Always a bystander, never interacting though. I mean, really? Haha, jeez."

"You knew I was following you? You knew my name and you didn't go to the police?" asked Luke.

"I didn't know your name until the cleaners gave me that card. And, I don't know...."

"What's the use? Aren't you like kind of a police officer in a way? So, if that's the case, you're obviously a dirty cop, right? If you kill people, too?"

"Who knows what I could run into trying to report you...more dirty cops? So why not me, Lucas? Why didn't you kill me? Why am I any different?" Megan's eyes started to fill up.

She turned away from Luke, pretending to examine the photos again.

"Because, Megan, I think I'm in love with you."

Megan turned to face Luke.

"Excuse me?"

"I'm sorry, I've never felt like this and I don't even understand it. But I knew I had to save you. If I declined him, he would've done something else and I-I couldn't let that happen..."

Megan didn't know what to think. She felt crazy.

Why was this happening to her? What did it all really mean? Could she trust Lucas Black or was he psychotic and up to something much worse then what he was claiming?

"I don't know what to say. I'm so grateful for you saving my life. But accepting all of this is a challenge. What am I supposed to do now? I mean, what were you expecting when I woke up or when you brought me down here?"

“I honestly didn’t think that far ahead. All I knew was that I had to get you out of there. And I’m sorry I followed you for so long. It’s my job, though. I know I probably seem like a huge weirdo..."

"...I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting with someone I’ve been hired to investigate. "

"I also have never felt the way I feel about you, with any of those people…or anyone at all. Ever."

"I never planned on it being this way. But I know that I would do anything for you. "

"I have never believed in fate. But maybe I was supposed to do all of this, to save your life. As for what you do now. That’s your choice. "

"We can go to the police and turn in your husband if that’s what you want to do. You are welcome here if you feel comfortable enough to do that. You can stay as long as you want. I’m not forcing you to stay, you can walk right out that door and I’ll provide whatever you need..I would love it if you stayed, just to throw that in there…”

"I think I need some water…” Megan’s face looked pale and it was likely she was about to get sick. She sat down on the ground and leaned up against the wall.

“I don’t feel so good…” Megan’s vision was blurry as she started to go unconscious again.

She could see Luke walking toward her, but then his feet faded along with everything else, into black pit of nothing....
