A different point of view

The Long Goodbye

I thought I would be here for ever Eons have I lasted Growing steadily stronger Embracing annual re-birth and decay

Short summers And terrible terrible winters that made me strong I have hidden depths A vast empire that you do not see

I send my children out into the world Across the sea and beyond But I am old and my time has come

The gentle hand of death is on my shoulder As I slip slowly from view As the ocean laps at my feet

Shrinking year by year Until the final dawn when I will go gracefully Leaving the world and its modern marvels To an unknown fate I never wish to see

My time will pass as all things do And tomorrow is for someone else's keeping. Adieu

An ice shelf is a thick suspended platform of ice that forms where a glacier or ice sheet flows down to a coastline and onto the ocean surface. Ice shelves are only found in Antarctica, Greenland, Canada, and the Russian Arctic.
