I was not born to die and lie beneath this foreign field Where poppies wave and show their petals to the sun

I could not hear the silence

I was not born to die and lie beneath this foreign field

Where poppies wave and show their petals to the sun

Like the wide and fragrant prairies that became my home

The stands of wheat yellow as far as the eye could see

And yet still so far from the grey land of my birth

Where I trod the London streets until my thirteenth year

Were you there when the guns fell silent

I was

My nurse a girl in white I could not see

Told me it was over

I could only hear her words

Too far gone to realise what it meant

I survived the war but not the peace

In memory of Nelson Victor Moran Emery. Shot on the evening of the 10th of November 1918 Died 12th November 1918 Aged 19 years
