I loved the way The Lone Ranger would ask Tonto for his opinion and it was alway so sage when he gave Kemosabe advice. The Mexican Braceros who worked on our ranch called me Tonto.
I though they considered me as cool and as wise as The Lone Ranger's sidekick. I was as stoked as a 6-year-old could get. This continued for a couple of years.
Then I learned to speak Spanish. I picked it up from the Braceros, The Spanish Basque sheepherders, and friends at school. Finally, I took Spanish in high school.
Tonto means idiot in Spanish.
