10 ways to word a thesis of an argument paper

So everyone who's in school has had to do this one time or another: argument writing. Like, who else /loves/ enjoys writing about how EATING FREAKING BUGS is good?! I do! Me!

//COMMENT "🤤" IF YOU'VE EVER EATEN A BUG BEFORE//

#.savethecows

But like actually, though. And I'm not sure about you, but a lot of my theses are really repetitive...okay they're me repeating the same thing with different wordings.

Because in my mind, "eating bugs can be nutritious" and "consuming insects is beneficial to human health" sound the same.

I'm in honors English, for all you who were wondering.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

And so, being the awesome person I am, I decided to be helpful in one of my tips (for once) and do something *remotely* beneficial! By providing templates, of course.

You're welcome.

1) It is clearly evident that _____ is _____ because _____

Example:

It is clearly evident that /consuming insects/ is /beneficial/ because /insects contain a comparable amount of protein with more healthy fats versus meat/.

('because' bit from google--I'm not really informed on this topic lololololololol)

Belle's experienced advice:

Make sure that you're because is really vague, that way when you write your supporting paragraphs, you will have enough details left to talk about.

Also, don't list out your reasons--vague statements with specific supporting paragraphs seems more sophisticated by most teachers' standards.

2) For this reason, it can be assumed that _____ is ______

Example:

For this reason, it can be assumed that /eating bugs/ is /healthy/.

Belle's experienced advice:

Make sure the bit following your "is" is vague, for the same reason my first sample should be kept vague.

Also, try to refrain from saying "should", but rather "can", because the word "can" is more strong, and therefore, persuasive.

3) By considering all of the aforementioned (optional _____), we can assume that ______ is ______

Example(s):

WITH THE OPTIONAL BIT: By considering all of the aforementioned /information/, we can assume that /eating bugs/ is /beneficial/.

WITHOUT THE OPTIONAL BIT: By considering all of the aforementioned, we can assume that /eating bugs/ is /beneficial/.

Belle's experienced advice:

This one really depends on the sentences that lead up to it. If you provide a lot of background, go with the optional bit. If you explained your opinion, go without.

4) If we don't _____, then _____ will ______

Example:

If we don't /start to consume bugs and other insects/, then /the world's food supply/ will /drop/. (completely made up by the way)

Belle's experienced advice:

Try to be a bit dramatic with the statement that follows the "then", but make sure it isn't too over-the-top.

Set your word choice to be within reality; don't say something too outrageous or impossible.

5) While some critics might say that _____, _____ is actually _____

Example:

While some critics might say that /eating bugs is gross/, /consuming insects/ is actually /greatly beneficial/.

Belle's experienced advice:

Make sure you stay away from phrases like: "they are wrong" or "this is wrong". Your aim is to PROVE them wrong, not say that they are.

6) _____ develops ______ by _____

Example:

/Consuming insects/ develops /a healthy lifestyle/ by /gaining more protein and nutrients/.

Belle's experienced advice:

Make sure you don't list out your reasons, and instead, provide a general claim/idea/analogy that you can relate back to further in your piece.

7) _____ should _____ because _____. This can be _____ in _____, _____, and _____

Example:

/Americans/ should /begin to consume insects/ because /like more energy can be obtained by going vegetarian, insects have more benefits over other farm animals/.

This can be /seen/ in /the nutrients insects provide/, /the wide supply of insects available/, and /the many meal options/.

Belle's experienced advice:

This thesis is a bit more centered along the lines of the 5-paragraph essay format, but with a more sophisticated twist.

Make sure to come up with a clever analogy for the bit following your "because".

8) Given ____, _____ must _____

Example:

Given /the numerous benefits of consuming insects/, /Americans/ must /change their diets/.

Belle's experienced advice:

Be sure to stay firm, with words like "must". If you are providing facts, stay away from "can", and use "shows" instead.

9) _____ must be _____, such as _____ and/or _____, because _____

Example:

/Eating insects/ must be /more widespread/, such as /having more restaurants offer insect-made meals/ or /becoming more socially acceptable/,

because /we will eventually run out of other forms of meat to consume/.

Belle's experienced advice:

Don't list your reasons in the bit following "such as", but rather, a point that you can connect to in your conclusion.

By giving a point in your introduction that you refer to throughout your piece, your thoughts, and therefore opinion, seem more valid.

10) _____ is ______ and _____. Additionally, _____. For this reason, _____ must _____

Example:

/Eating bugs/ is /more beneficial/ and /cost-efficient than consuming other meats/. Additionally, /insects provide more proteins/. For this reason, /people/ must /consider changing their diets/.

Belle's experienced advice:

Do NOT reveal what you plan to say in your supporting paragraphs! Instead, explain why some facts support your side.

These do NOT have to be numbers! By walking your reader through your thinking, you allow them to formulate their own opinions, while understanding your own.

This essentially will make what you're saying more convincing.

Now, go get your a! I BELIEVE IN YOU!

But like actually...wow, I just repeated the same thing over and over again, while wording what I was saying differently hahaha.

At least I *sound* smart ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ hahaha

Saaa dudes,

Belle :))
