monster

by astronomer

i see it there, in the darkest part of my room

i see it there, in the darkest part of my room that area happens to be directly across from where i lie in my bed.

i know i tend to be paranoid; i know my brain tends to make creatures appear from vague shapes

i know i tend to be paranoid; i know my brain tends to make creatures appear from vague shapes it will stand there, and i will be afraid, and that will be the end of it.

i keep telling myself this as i shut my eyes to sleep,

i keep telling myself this as i shut my eyes to sleep, open them out of fear,

i keep telling myself this as i shut my eyes to sleep, open them out of fear, close them yet again,

i keep telling myself this as i shut my eyes to sleep, open them out of fear, close them yet again, and let the cycle continue.

i finally drift off to sleep.

i finally drift off to sleep. my remaining thoughts as i'm drifting are of various horrific deaths turned into lasting tragedies --

i finally drift off to sleep. my remaining thoughts as i'm drifting are of various horrific deaths turned into lasting tragedies -- which isn't a good thing to fall asleep to.

the nightmares were horrendous, but i don't remember the contents at all

the nightmares were horrendous, but i don't remember the contents at all i only remember the loneliness

the nightmares were horrendous, but i don't remember the contents at all i only remember the loneliness and the crushing, suffocating fear i was feeling.

when i wake up, i can't move.

when i wake up, i can't move. it's the morning now; i slept through the night

when i wake up, i can't move. it's the morning now; i slept through the night and yet i'm awake now, and i cannot move.

the monster from the night before is still standing where it was when i'd fallen asleep

the monster from the night before is still standing where it was when i'd fallen asleep it should've gone away by now.

no matter! no matter.

no matter! no matter. hallucinations can't hurt me, i know that!

it creeps forward; its long, lanky limbs rest on the edge of my bed

it creeps forward; its long, lanky limbs rest on the edge of my bed as it looks at me.

it creeps forward; its long, lanky limbs rest on the edge of my bed as it looks at me. i still cannot move.

it crawls up onto my bed, and i can feel the weight of its movements

it crawls up onto my bed, and i can feel the weight of its movements that shouldn't be happening.

it crawls to where i am lying, still, and it looks down at my face with its cold eyes

it crawls to where i am lying, still, and it looks down at my face with its cold eyes i start to hear a dreadful noise from under my bed

it crawls to where i am lying, still, and it looks down at my face with its cold eyes i start to hear a dreadful noise from under my bed chhhggghhk. chhhhggghhk. chhhgghgggk.

it crawls to where i am lying, still, and it looks down at my face with its cold eyes i start to hear a dreadful noise from under my bed chhhggghhk. chhhhggghhk. chhhgghgggk. it sounds akin to someone being strangled to death

and the monster is still looking in my eyes.

and the monster is still looking in my eyes. it is pinning me down now.

and the monster is still looking in my eyes. it is pinning me down now. i'm trying to move

and the monster is still looking in my eyes. it is pinning me down now. i'm trying to move oh good god i am trying so hard

and the monster is still looking in my eyes. it is pinning me down now. i'm trying to move oh good god i am trying so hard but it seems all of my efforts are fruitless

and the monster is still looking in my eyes. it is pinning me down now. i'm trying to move oh good god i am trying so hard but it seems all of my efforts are fruitless and i can feel the monster's cold breath on my face

as i keep trying,

as i keep trying, i feel my fingers start to move.

as i keep trying, i feel my fingers start to move. only slightly, but i can move my fingers.

as i keep trying, i feel my fingers start to move. only slightly, but i can move my fingers. then, the rest of my arms

as i keep trying, i feel my fingers start to move. only slightly, but i can move my fingers. then, the rest of my arms slowly but surely i gain control of my own body

and the monster disappears.

and the monster disappears. i was experiencing sleep paralysis with a monster that just so happened to stay the night,

and the monster disappears. i was experiencing sleep paralysis with a monster that just so happened to stay the night, but what about the horrible noises?

chhggghhkk. chhhghgghhkk.

chhggghhkk. chhhghgghhkk. i look under my bed.

chhggghhkk. chhhghgghhkk. i look under my bed. my cat has a cold.
