A Tale Of Two Best Friends By Artsyunicorn

Ailey Clifford stared into the thick fog. Rain dripped from her jacket onto the wet cobblestone under her feet.

Her cheeks had turned pink from the crisp, cold air. Suddenly she saw something in the distance. As it got closer, she realized it was someone.

“Toby!” Ailey exclaimed. “Hey Ailey!” replied Toby. “Hey. I waited for 10 minutes in the rain!” “Oh yeah, sorry ‘bout that. Sally wouldn’t let me go.” “You always use your little sister as an excuse.”

Toby shrugged. They headed toward the park and soon disappeared into the fog.

A couple of moments later, Toby and Ailey arrived at the park. Ailey stared at the once-beautiful flowers that were now drowning in water. She caught Toby looking at her and smiling shyly. She pretended not to notice.

The two carried on walking. A minute later they stopped by a café. Ailey opened the door, and Toby followed her.

Heya Ailey hon! How are you doing?” asked the owner, Millie. “Hi, Millie! I’m good. I brought Toby with me.” answered Ailey. Toby said hi, and they sat down at their favorite table. Ailey and Toby came here every Sunday since they were 10.

So, you two, will you have your regulars?” asked Millie. “Yes please,” said Ailey and Toby in unison. “Alrighty! Two burgers with a side of fries coming up!”

Toby and Ailey started talking. Ailey paid attention to Toby’s body language. He looked relaxed, as he should be, for they had been the best of friends since they were two.

Ten minutes later, Millie carried two big plates of burgers and fries. Ailey began eating her burger, but Toby ate his fries first. They talked a bit more and paid.

The sky had cleared up, and the rain had stopped. The sun came out and shone down on the park. Ailey and Toby walked for a bit more, then decided to head home.

Ailey could see the glint of sadness in Toby's eyes when she said bye to him.
