The dystopian experience of a child living close to a nuclear power plant. Written for a poetry class.

Nuclear

Gray screen.

A white pill vacuum-sealed in silver; The wrapper glints at the bottom of the backpack. Bite it in half. Only take half.

Two gas masks hang limp from a nail, Two masks for four people.

Only ten minutes away In a parking lot Sits the black car.

A herd of children descends stone steps,

Then they are a huddled mass in a basement.

Wait till your name is called.

Released into the congested highway Like blood refusing to circulate.

This is only a test.
