They put on their full hazmat suits, complete with a bright yellow suit, helmet, and gloves. The whole process of putting that on took about 15 minutes. As they walked up to the morgue door Benjamin saw someone already in a suit standing next to the corpse.
“Is there someone else already in there Rob?” he asked.
Robert pushed his way past Benjamin and into the room, “Hey! You’re not authorized to be down here!” The older gentleman stood there with his arms raised over his head. “I’m sorry… I…I’m the one who brought him in.”
Benjamin walked up to Robert and motioned for him to take a step back. He stepped back and stood next to Dante while Benjamin asked the morgue attendant some questions.
“What’s your name?”
“Ha Bill Vill.”Dante muttered. “Okay Bill you can put your hands down. I need to ask you if you have come in direct contact with this body.” Benjamin turned and glared at Dante over his shoulder then turned his attention back to the old man standing in front of him with his hands still raised.
He shook his head,
“No, when I picked it up at the county morgue they said it was a special case.”
“Pretty damn special.” Robert motioned to the body lying on the table.
“Okay Bill, I’m going to let you stay and help us examine the body, okay?”
He nodded and joined them around the table. Lying in front of them was a man in his late thirties to early forties. His chest rose and fell the same as theirs. His eyelid twitched, he only had one.
The other half of his face showed nothing but muscles and bone. Benjamin stepped closer, grabbed an instrument off the cart and held it in front of his nose. It fogged up.
“Holy shit, Benjamin turned to Robert, how can this be, he’s alive but not conscious. Is this a coma? Why isn’t he on ventilators?”
“Ben, he doesn’t have a pulse.”
“What do you mean he doesn’t have a pulse? He’s breathing!” Dante said as he bent down. Benjamin grabbed his wrist with his gloved hand, no pulse but he could hear his own quicken. He tried his neck, still nothing.
Everyone in the room took a step forward and marveled over the fact that this man who was legally dead was somehow breathing.
“That’s not all, Robert said as he motioned for them to follow him over to the computer, I took these pictures of when the body came in.” he clicked on a picture of what appeared to be the same guy except more of his face, hair and skin was missing.
“Oh god.” “This is two hours later.” The next picture showed the face being reconstructed, more hair on his head and skin being repaired. “Another two hours later.”
They all leaned in close to the computer screen, “His muscles and bones are reconstructing his face, even his eye lashes and eye brows are re growing.” Dante pointed out on the screen.
Benjamin turned his attention to the guy lying on the table, “Who the hell is this guy?” “Coroner labeled him as a John Doe. Nobody knows how he ended up in the county morgue. He was just there in a slot.” Bill said.
“Okay, first of all we need samples of his blood and tissue. Run them under a different name in case homeland security tries to intercept.” he said. “I’ll get the samples.” Dante said warily.
Benjamin made Bill the look- out person while Robert and him looked more carefully at the pictures on the screen. “Uh Mr.C. You’re gonna want to look at this.” Dante said.
Robert and Benjamin walked over to Dante who had a syringe in his hand and the deceased arm in his other. He poked the syringe into the arm, pulled back the plunger and a black gel entered it.
“What the hell?” “Is that coagulated blood?” The tiny little pin prick from the needle was gone from the skin. Benjamin looked at the face of the man lying on the table. New skin had formed on his face in the time they spent in here.
“He’s regenerating his whole body.” “This is some X Files shit.” Benjamin would have glared at Dante but he was right, this was something you’d see on T.V.
“Someone’s coming!” Bill yelled. Benjamin grabbed the syringe from Dante, ran over to his bag, grabbed a vial and put some of the deceased blood into it.
He tossed the syringe into the trash and walked over to the rest of them as three guys with army uniforms and guns opened the door. They were escorted off the property before Benjamin had a chance to argue because of the look Robert gave him. He went quietly but had the intention of coming back. He just needed to figure out how.
“Robert I need you to get me back in there. This is a medical breakthrough; we can’t just let homeland security wipe it away.”
“I’ll see what I can do. For now go back to your hotel and check up on your daughter.”
He nodded and got into the car with Dante. Dante turned to him with a scared look in his eyes, “What’s going to happen Mr. C?” He shook his head, “I don’t know kid; we may have just witnessed the single greatest or scariest thing in modern medicine.”
