The Parent

Sometimes I am a punching bag They say it's all my fault A parent of these teenagers These days they're standing tall

Parents don't know anything Though we've lived 3 times their years Surely we can't comprehend What's behind their tears

Parents must face a truth When our wisdom we try to tell They must experience it themselves That's how they'll learn it well

There are things I want to say But they don't want to hear They already know the answer To them it's very clear

But there are no easy answers When life hands them a fright How can I take away their pain I think on it all night

I've tried to give them everything This twist I did not expect They're dealing with a problem Very difficult to correct

The burden is much too large We must reach out for help Please don't be insulted If you can't carry this yourself

Each day has become a battle And I wish we wouldn't fight They think that I don't understand But I must do what's right

Their words cut very deep They need someone to blame Insults they hurl at me online I endure this every day

But parent I must, although They think I can't teach Certainly some days I'd rather be at the beach

Being a parent Is a great sacrifice All your energy To give them a good life The number one thing A teenager doesn't know Even when they reject us We still love them so
