“Hey, dipshit.”

The voice came from the other side of the room.

“That’s right buddy, time to wake up.”

His accent was apparent, but his commands were always clear.

My eyes squinted, the bright light burning my retinas. I was lying on the cold concrete floor, limbs bound.

Just as it had been the last 72 days.

As I attempted to regain my bearings, a boot slammed into my ribs. I saw stars

“A little faster please, dipshit.”

I struggled onto my side, groaning.

“There he is. Welcome back, Yargan.”

Ah yes, my name. I had almost forgotten. As my vision cleared, I saw my interrogator.

He had a short military haircut, and wore black fatigues with the emblem on the breast; a golden bear with a red sash across it. The mark of the Ducal Special Operations Group. The Sashes.

“So, buddy,” he spoke with sarcasm,” Now that you’re awake and all, I had an idea. How about I ask you a question? Just a simple one- I bet you’ve heard it before.”

Ha. I bet I have, I thought.

“When was the last time you saw Delic Hassani?” He asked

Hassani. I remember his name. The promise I made.

I shook my head weakly.

The Sash grinned, a devilish smile. He knelt down by my face.

“Look, Yargan, all you have to do is answer the question. That’s it. You walk out that door and return to your pool hall and live.

Or,” he paused, standing back up,” You can stay here, and enjoy my company.”

As an exclamation point, he slammed his boot into my nose. The bone audibly cracked, and hot blood splattered all over the floor. I choked back tears.

Remember the promise. Forget Hassani.

Suddenly, through the pain I heard a door open.

“Captain,” a new voice spoke. This one was cultured, soft.

“Ah, you must be the Investigators. Pieter Val-”

“Shut up and exit the room, Captain.” Another voice, this one female. “Your techniques have already failed, and made our jobs harder.”

The Captain made no response. I heard his boots exit the door.

I rolled over, attempting to see the new voices. I squinted, and made out two tall, slender figures. Both were dressed in all black, with long black coats.

The woman had short blonde hair, cut like a man’s. The man was older, with black hair speckled with grey. They were halfway across the room when I noticed their eyes.

I wish I had not. I felt my skull begin to throb, and my hands begin to shake. My whole body began to convulse, and bile rose in my throat. But my eyes were frozen.

I couldn’t feel them, couldn’t blink. But I could see. God help me, I saw.

The man and the woman looked down at me, but not with their eyes. Instead, 4 glowing blue crystals stared past me, into my mind, my soul.

That was the point when I began to realize I was hemorraghing.
