*How the hell does anyone live down here?* I asked myself. *I’ve been wandering around for hours and every corridor looks exactly the same.
It’s just bookshelf after bookshelf with occasional lamps hanging from the ceiling. How do people live here, and I can’t even find my way back up? I must have gone the wrong way at some point.
Alistair said it would be no more than thirty minutes and I would be back on the surface.*
I arrived at a crossing. *Great. Alistair never mentioned a crossing.* I looked in all directions. Again all corridors looked the same. Except there was a strange dark puddle in one of them.
I squatted next to it to take a closer look, when something moved in the corner of my eye.
Startled I almost tripped over my own feet while trying to stand back up. A crooked figure with gray skin stepped into the light of the lamp next to me. It appeared to be a human.
At least it seems like it once was.
„Hello“, the figure said with a voice that reminded me of that annoying teenager living next to my house.
„Me is Babbit“, it continued while pointing to his chest, „You?“ It looked at me with a wide smile that showed his rotten teeth.
„Um… I… I am Jonathan“, I replied.
„Is Jonathan lost down here?“, Babbit asked.
„What?... Um… No, no, I’m just on my way back to the surface.“, I said pointing to the tunnel on my left.
Babbit slightly tilted his head. „But up is this way.“ It nodded to the tunnel I just came from.
„Is Jonathan hungry? Jonathan can eat with Babbit, then Babbit shows way up, yes?“ Again Babbit smiled at me with his rotten teeth.
*It seems to be nice*, I thought, *but there is something... unsettling about him... her?* "Thanks, but I'm not hungry. I think I'll just go my way.
" I smiled at Babbit, who seemed to be disappointed, and was about to turn away, when my stomach started growling.
"Ha! Jonathan is hungry. Come! Come!" Babbit eagerly signaled me to follow him, and turned away.
*Whatever, he seems to be a nice one. Also he appears to know his way around here.
* So I went on to follow Babbit, which proved to be more difficult than i thought, as Babbit was remarkably fast. At least he stopped every once a while to see if i was still following him.
After I completely lost track of our route, we arrived at a big cavern, that was almost empty except for a wooden hut in the middle. Babbit was waiting for me to open the door, so I did.
When I saw the interior of the hut, my eyes went wide open. The hut was filled with dead bodies hanging from the ceiling, and the floor was covered in bones.
Before I could react something hit me hard on the back of the head.
