Because I can’t walk from my car to a concert venue down a crowed sidewalk without some drunk asshole shouting “Hey, what are you up to tonight? You lookin’ to party?
” I Ignored him, and he followed.
For 6 blocks he followed me, continually shouting questions, asking where I was from, my name, if he could give me a high five, followed by “I’m not creepy I promise.
” Funny how that’s generally said by creepy men right before they do something incredibly creepy.
There are people everywhere around me on my walk from hell,
but no one says boo about this guy’s obvious and vocal harassment because this shit is so normalized that if it doesn’t affect us directly we ignore it.
Drunk guy gets extra mad when I refuse to give him (a random stranger who’s just been following me for 6 blocks shouting at me) a high five.
He starts shouting even louder about how “Some people are so stuck up they won’t even give you a high five.” Then it goes from bad to worse.
My crime of ignoring him leads to him to shout while still following me, “The only thing she’s good for is getting fucked in the pussy.
Stuck up bitch!” There are kids and families and cops everywhere. No one bats an eyelash.
Because it’s just some drunk guy being stupid, right? When people talk about not needing feminism anymore in 2017, remember encounters like this.
Remember that for women in 2017, the simple act of ignoring a man’s unwanted attention can lead to threats of violence.
This is what gendered violence looks like and every woman at some point in her life has experienced it. We don’t need feminism in 2017 because everyone is equal now? Naw. Not even close.
