I’ll never forget the last time I saw my daughter Vanessa smile…
A couple years ago a repair man was working in our backyard on some exposed pipes. He was in and out of our basement for days.
On his last day Vanessa vanished along with a small safe where I kept important documents.
The police arrested him four days later and held him for two weeks. During that time there was nothing they could pin on him besides circumstantial evidence.
The hardest thing in the world was coming to the conclusion that maybe it wasn’t him.
A couple days before his release date the man sent me a letter through my lawyer that actually expressed real sadness that she disappeared. A few sentences appeared underneath his signature.
>*Look deep within the soul and she will be there safe,*
>*In our hearts.*
>*The time will come, when she smiles again.*
>*Shed no more tears until then.*
They had to let him go and he split town.
A couple years later Vanessa's headless corpse was found upstate inside of a dumpster in an abandoned warehouse.
When they arrested another man it brought some resolution, but my wife and I still got divorced. We divided up our belongings before moving out.
The shed out back was the last thing to deal with. Inside, I noticed some panels on the floor were cut into a square. With a crowbar I lifted them up and was looking down at my missing safe.
The door had holes drilled into it and I opened it easily.
Vanessa's tiny head was crammed in there sideways, her rotting cheeks crushed into a smile.
