As soon as her eyes filled with tears I felt sick to my stomach. I hated seeing her so upset, I hated seeing her cry. “Hey, hey,” I said softly, pulling her close to me.
“Everything’s gonna be okay.”
She sobbed out and choked on her words, “I don’t get it.”
I hugged her tighter. “They’re assholes,” I whispered in her ear. “All of them. They don’t know you, they have no right.”
I rocked her slowly, trying desperately to calm her down. “I love you,” she whispered softly, letting go of me but grabbing my hand.
“I love you too,” I smiled at her. “And I always will, no matter what those assholes say.”
