On the other hand, it’s helpful to remember that, in broad historical terms, the human experience is definitely improving.
Our existence is still steadily progressing toward less violence, less suffering, and more equality.
Incidents such as the Crusades, European colonization, the Taiping Rebellion, the Holocaust, Apartheid, and even the Vietnam War are unlikely ever to recur to quite the same degree.
This is easy to forget when change seems so frustratingly slow in coming, relative to our own lifetimes, and when we feel so powerless to have any impact in such a huge, complex,
and diverse world. Continuing to study history and reflect on the present does help. We haven’t made all the mistakes yet, but we are learning from past ones.
