My friend: “When did it become ok to walk life out….
Alone?”Me: “I don’t know about it being ok, but we currently live in society that seems to idealize individualism, by destroying social context, and ignoring our emotional needs.
Our society cuts us off from our emotional, spiritual and communal needs, thus generating pathology.
Living in a individualistic and materialistic society says what matters is not who we are, but how we are valued by others.
So, many of us are now checking out, not realizing our society seeks to separate us from ourselves and essentially each other.
Personally speaking, I really do enjoy my own company, more than I’m comfortable admitting sometimes. Other times, I seek solitude simply because I genuinely need to and find peace in it.
But I don’t think it’s healthy to live life completely and utterly alone. I don’t want to become so used to my own company that I unintentionally isolate and withdrawal into myself.
We need each other to survive.”
