It’s always raining, here or inside me, I wake up to

it when I sleepwalk, feet bare and shivering, arms marked in goose flesh and

covered in bruises that don’t belong to my skin. My Pa took me hunting and whenever we caught something,

snared in our traps, he would break its neck.

‘Better to give it a quick death,’ he said. He didn’t want to admit that

he liked to kill things with his handsI thought of killing as something you had to do when

you were backed into a corner. Like a wild animal, injured at the hand of its

pursuer, you fight with everything you had in you. But the thought of killing

made my hands shake.  It was the kind of thing you hid behind your back

when your parent asked you what you were doing. The kind of thing that you

don’t understand, how it happened and why the person isn’t moving anymore. You don’t understand how you got here.  Novel tag // Cait Potter
