I work at a relatively new, next-gen type of theater, where the concession is basically set up like a cafe.
We have the snackbar- it starts out with the popcorn servers/people who take orders for things, then the hot spot where things like hot dogs and nachos are put out for customers to grab,
then you have the drink towers, and then it leads to where our registers are. On other side, facing away, is an area that's set up as our coffee cafe place.
Then there's a lobby with seating where people can sit and eat their snacks before going in or after their show.
One guy got a medium popcorn, then instead of walking down the registers to pay, he went over to the lobby and sat down. He had another friend with them.
I thought he had paid over at the cafe, since I saw him with a drink, but the person doing cafe told me that he hadn't paid for the popcorn there, either.
I left the managers know, but since we're not really allowed to confront them, there wasn't much we could do.
The guy and his friend just sat in the lobby, munching on popcorn, and then left it there. I thought they had left, but later on they came back to the lobby and kept hanging out.
The guys actually bought a large soda from me...I thought of saving the guy's receipt but then I realized that they don't have personal information like names on them.
The one who stole the popcorn seemed pretty high/stoned on something, which the manager commented on, which is why I pretty much think they let it go.
The self-serve concept is pretty cool; however I do think it makes stealing much easier.
