The Parasite

by

I was terrified when I found out I had a parasite.

Rats can get parasites that make them stop being afraid of cats so they get eaten, so the parasite can enter its next host.

They told me my parasite isn't like that, but it *is* changing me. They said it wasn’t harmful but I still hated it.

I wanted them to take it out straight away, but they wouldn't; “It’s too risky,” they said. “It’s safer to wait a while.”

I waited weeks upon unbearable weeks, terrified and nauseated. *It’s okay*, I reminded myself. *It’s safer this way.* But all the while the parasite fed off me, growing, and changing me.

*It’s safer this way.*

When the day finally came, I was so repulsed by what that thing had done to me I couldn’t even look at myself, but I smiled as they took me into surgery: it was almost over.

“We’re going to keep you awake,” they said. “It’s safer.” I was nervous but they assured me I wouldn’t feel a thing. So I lay on the table, and they sliced me open and began cutting out the parasite.

It was frightening, but I kept repeating my little mantra to myself to keep me calm: *Safer this way, safer this way, safer this way…*

But when the machines I was hooked up to started beeping and flashing with alarms, the doctors ignored them; they kept their attention on the parasite as they lifted it out of me.

As my vision blurred and breathing became difficult, the world went dark, and I realised I never asked them...

Safer for whom?
