When the dead started coming back to life, there was panic.
Everyone automatically jumped to zombie invasion, which is why it took so long. Everyone shot or decapitated the first undead that came at them.
We had seen so many movies that there was no way that zombies were going to be the ones to take us out.
Their grunting and groaning sounded just like the movies- but most of the time they were dead before they ever made a noise. They only made noises around humans, interestingly enough.
Almost…like they were trying to communicate.
After the first wave, we scientists decided to study the living dead. They were captured, contained, and tested vigorously. They frantically groaned at the scientists.
What was discovered is that the, for lack of better terms, fresher the body, the clearer the groans. They could communicate.
The youngest body they had discovered had been dead for a few months, but his groans were almost understandable. That’s when they decided they needed a fresh subject.
They started taking terminal people from the hospital and killing them. Humanely, but waiting for them to come back didn’t feel that humane, honestly.
Seeing someone come back was something I wish I never saw. The look of horror on the man’s face, bloody tears streaming, and his eager yet sluggish body movements told me something was wrong.
“What is it?” we asked.
His speech wasn’t clear, but the message was. When we deciphered the message, this is what we found.
**No God. No Hell. No Heaven. But They are coming. Save us.**
