The little white lie we tell our children.

by DrCarnasis

Nadia's eyes open and grow wide in terror.

The four-year-old girl couldn't move as a dark figure stands at a distance at the foot of her bed, buzzing.

Unable to pull the covers over her head, she tries to scream but all that comes is silence. The buzzing grows louder and louder as the dark creature approaches, arms wide open.

"I am going to get you..." with a chorus of jarring reverb, the creature whispers coarsely,

Nadia screams but this time, it worked! Pulling the covers over her head, the buzzing stops. A thumping and the door swings open and illumination as Kevin, her father, turns on the light.

"Nadia!" Her father calmly approaches and sits down at the corner of her bed holding her hand, "Everything okay?"

"A monster was here," Nadia says crying and sits up, "it wanted to eat me!" She hugs her father as Yolande, Nadia's mother, arrives at the door.

"It's okay, it was just a nightmare." Kevin hugs her back, "There is no such thing as monsters. Do you want to come sleep with mom and me?" He looks over at Yolande who gives an assuring nod.

"No. I am okay. I am a big girl!" Nadia smiles sniffling laying back down, "I love you, mom and dad." She closes her eyes and tries to go back to sleep.

"Can you leave a light on?" She says coyly.

"Absolutely honey bear," Yolande says from the door, "Dad and I will be right here if you need us."

Kevin stands up and closes the door and both Yolande and he go back to their bedroom.

Yolande puts a hand on her husband's back, "We shouldn't lie to her," she hesitates for a moment "we should tell her the truth."

Kevin turns to his wife, "What if we did tell her this monster was real, or that all ghosts, all demons, everything...

what would that accomplish?

" He stretches up and straightens the wreath above their full-length body mirror then touches a totem on the dresser, "Nothing but scare her - and what kind of parent does that to their children?

It's a parents responsibility to keep their children safe, and sometimes we have to lie about what is out there to protect them.

" He takes a key from behind the totem and unlocks a dresser drawer, "If we are blessed, she will believe the lie and never have to face it.

" Kevin opens the drawer and grabs a rune-inscribed machete.

"When will you be back?" Yolande asks.

"When I kill the son-of-a-bitch that wants our girl!" Kevin turns and walks through the mirror disappearing into the shimmer.
