It seems like with "Free the Nipple" and other organizations that want to give women the same rights as men with regards to being legally allowed to be in certain places bare chested

you'll hear people try to argue that the female breast is not sexual.

I feel that by promoting such an ideal they are being counter productive when the argument should be that the female breast is not obscene.

I feel that the female breast is inherently sexy in certain context but that doesn't mean that women shouldn't be allowed to be topless in public.

For example, as a straight man if I were to go to the beach and see a beautiful woman sunbathing topless that would be sexy to me. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Accordingly, for many straight women and gay men, if a handsome fit man is walking around with his shirt off that would be seen as sexy to them.

However in many places it would be illegal or at least frowned upon for the woman to do so while the man can do so without consequence.

Instead of trying to change an entire culture that believe that female breasts are sexy, the focus should be more that something being sexy isn't a horrible,

obscene thing that society needs protection from.

What do you guys think? Am I missing something or should the goal of these groups change from asserting the idea that women's breasts aren't sexual?

Edit:

Great responses so far! A couple of things I' like to point out.

I see how some people have pointed out that I may have made a semantic error as far as claiming breasts are inherently sexual in certain context.

Perhaps a better wording may have been innately sexual depending on context.

My point being, the genitals are body parts we can all agree are definitely sexual in nature, that's their function after all. However, in certain contexts they are not sexual.

For example,

if a woman's vulva is being touched by a sexual partner then that part is obviously sexual but if the same part is being touched as part of a gynecological exam then that is not a sexual context.

Additionally, in response to a number of comments that a woman's breasts only serve to feed children,

while that is an important biological aspect of the female breast I feel that it it borders on mild sexism as if the only function of a woman's body is to bear, and in the case of breasts,

feed children. Many women do not have children and yet many of these woman still feel that their breasts are a party of their femininity.

So while yes I wholeheartedly agree that breasts serve a biological function as a method of feeding children, and maybe that is the main or most important purpose,

I won't agree that that is their only function.

Finally, I have also seen some other comments that have pointed out the fact that depending on the person a number of body parts other than breasts could be seen as sexual.

There are a number of foot fetishists out there who are just as turned on by women's feet as others are breasts. There's probably neck fetishists, elbow fetish, shoulder fetish and many others.

Hell I haven't looked but there's probably a subreddit for each of those.

That being said, I'm talking about the majority of American society as a whole when I talk about the innate sexuality of the female breast.

I don't have the specific stats, but I'd wager that the portion of men who find the female breast sexy is much larger than those who find the female foot sexy.

Although given the prudishness that our culture often has I'm sure if the numbers were flipped, flip flops would be banned.

The arguments that have change my view so far as those that clarify what is meant by desexualize in as far as groups like Free the Nipple are trying to do.

In some cultures, especially in parts of the Middle East, pretty much all of the female body is so hyper sexualized that women have to be covered head to toe.

In the past in America it wasn't a whole lot better, women were arrested for showing their ankles and so forth.

It seems like we have a spectrum of sexiness that goes from acceptable to not acceptable as far as public display.

Most hetero men would agree that a beautiful woman in a lowcut dress, a tight skirt, or a bikini is sexy and we see that in public all the time.

But we don't see what we'd find in hardcore pornography in public or if we do it's quickly shut down.

If the movement is trying to assert that a bare breast falls much closer to a bikini or skimpy dress than it does hard core porn then I'd definitely agree as oppose to saying it

doesn't fall on that spectrum at all.
