6 days ago, May 30th to be exact, I decided to watch DOTS and guess what? I love it. every bit of it.
I put the drama on hold since it didn’t really catch my whole attention when it was still being broadcasted. Now I fully understand all of the hype surrounding the drama.
I will go into detail about the drama later,
since the thing I want to highlight right now is my rants and my questions regarding the bandwagon hate done by some kdrama elitists towards the drama, the writer,
and the other hit drama that was written by the same writer who wrote DOTS, Goblin.
As I scroll through my timeline I see some kdrama fans are so hyped on boycotting writer Kim Eun Sook for writing another dramas. I get if you aren’t into both DOTS and Goblin theme.
I get if the two dramas had a loose tie on here and there. I get if the writing bears so many cheesy lines, imperfect plots, and lack of technicality and stuffs.
I get if both arent into your liking. and I really get if you’re mad cause both dramas, the actors, and also the writer got all the shiny things aka awards, popularity, fame, and so on.
The only thing I don’t get is how shallow you could get by spreading the bandwagon hate towards the drama and naming people who like it as ‘the new fan’,
‘amateur’ or simply don’t have good taste in knowing which one is good and which one is cheap.
These kdrama elitists would throw every drama and writer under the bus if its not into their tea and call every popular and overrated dramas as ‘cheap’.
I myself have been watching kdramas since 2001, and I appreciate every single of it. I like some, dislike some. But I dont want to say some dramas are cheap simply because I dislike it.
I admit I’m more into a funny romcom and fantasy type rather than the thriller or horror genre. I also like historical theme.
and that doesn’t mean I completely stay away from the genre I like less.
Watching dramas is all about preference, getting the enjoyment and the fun, getting sad and touched by the story, or getting angry because of the tragic narration.
I really have no idea since when watching dramas equals to get categorized into different type of class and degree of fan. Lets dig into what I like about both DOTS and Goblin.
Firstly because it suits my genre well, the romcom funny fantasy and sweet story.
Second, both the dramas doesn’t follow the second lead clichés, we don’t get to see or bear the appearance of evil 2nd lead female instead I meet one of the charismatic, funny,
refreshing and witty 2nd lead female (Sunny and Myeong Joo). I think those are enough reasons for me to not drop the drama at the first glance.
I will not go into detail about other aspects that make the drama drop dead interesting and memorable to me.
Without resorting to further sentimentality I would also pick dramas like Six Flying Dragons and Signal as one of the best. The reasonings are clear for dramas like this.
The clarity, accuracy, and artistry are no doubt contributing into the drama’s best feature.
The elitist would set a line and call dramas like 6FD are the only dramas they should watch, that people who prefer 6FD over DOTS are the ‘real’ kdrama fans,
that those who like Goblin more that Signal are the cheap and beginner fans who know nothing about dramaland. These categorization are what frustrate me most.
why can’t people appreciate every single drama and put aside all the sentiment.
Well I wont say the opposite if people complain about the incompetence, plot-holes, and other stumbling rocks in melodrama like DOTS and Goblin cause I know it’s right there.
It happened and that kind of ‘no-makes-sense-scene’ sometime also bothers me but hey this is a drama, a kdrama to be exact.
rather than complaining, I would embrace those shortfalls and enjoy the other part, the funny and hilarious scenes.
I know exactly that kdrama or any asian dramas or series never make sense since the beginning but that doesnt make me stop watching them.
Call me cheap but I really appreciate each and every dramas although I do admit the dramas that I would always come back to is mostly those romcom, sweet and simple ones.
There are more that I want to rant about, but I think it ends here for today’s yelling.
