This happened to me back when I was in college in the early 90s.
I am 19 and I am taking a music appreciation class. It is a relatively small class and I sit next to guy named Matt. He is cute, friendly, he cracks jokes with me before class. Seems nice enough.
A few weeks into the class our teacher gives us an assignment to watch the movie "Amadeus" and write a paper on it--Similarities, and differences to how Mozart was in real life.
Matt suggests we rent it and watch it together. I tell him I actually own it and he can come over to my house and we'll watch it together.
At this point, he knows I live at home with my parents and he says "Sounds great! I'll be there at 7."
I'm excited because Matt is cute and friendly and seems interested in me. So I'm sitting there at home waiting for him to come over.
(This was back in the day before cell phones) and long around 7:30 I get a call from him asking if I could come over to his place instead. This seems odd to me.
I ask him why and he says "Well your parents won't be here. It will just be us and we can have our privacy and hang out.
" Completely not an unusual request, especially if you're into someone and want to hook up.
I ask him where he lives and he gives me his address. It's about a 30 minute drive from where I live and it's a rather remote/woodsy area of town. Houses are far apart from each other.
I am thinking in my head about how long the drive would be, what time it would place me there, do I really want to be alone with him and/or hook up with him?...etc.
and I'm thinking something is off. Something doesn't seem right. It just seems so sudden to call me the night of our "date" and just ask me to come over to his house.
We've never been on a date before and we've only known each other about a month and his first suggestion for a date is asking me to come over to his empty house.
Why not a public place? Like I said, it all just seems too suspicious for me.
Just as I'm about to tell him "no thanks" I hear about 3 or 4 other guys in the background laughing and saying "Did she go for it?!"
He quickly tries to cover the noise by coughing and I just say "Yeah, no thanks" and hang up.
The next time we see each other in class he's giving me the cold shoulder and decides he no longer wants to sit next to me. He was a total jerk the rest of the semester.
He either ignored me or was shooting me dirty looks. I was so glad to have that class be done with.
However, I did see him striking up a conversation with another girl in our class. I happened to have another class with her (Biology) so we kinda know each other.
She later approached me after our Biology class and asked me what I though of Matt since we were friends. He asked her out and she wanted to know if she should go.
I told her NO and told her my story and that were were NOT friends at all and he's lying. She was creeped out as well and thanked me profusely.
I'm sure I saved myself from being raped that night--if not murdered. I'm sure I saved my classmate as well. I'm glad she asked.
I wish I could have reported him, but I didn't have any proof of this game he was trying to play with women. I often wonder if/when he ever got a girl to say yes and meet him there.
