Near the Suburbs of Alamogordo, New Mexico by Garrick Davis

by BlueHarmonium

On the interstate at noon,

Condominiums flare

From a bleak desert dune.

Nearby, at the heat's crisis,

A dust storm swirls, inflates

Like real estate prices

As the new aqueduct rakes

Mowed lawns from the fused sand

Of the Trinitite lakes.

But these towns remain mirage

And all is desert, filled

By cactus or garage

Since the emptiness endures

In uniformed faces

Behind cash registers

With their mobile homes on blocks,

All seduced to that plain

Where the clock never stops.

As if, colonized, the test-site

Where the fire was unleashed

From the atom's chained flight

Returned, at the end of time,

In one vast sun, which burned

The abyss through every eye.
