So my dog passed away over the summer and for whatever reason I’m missing him a whole lot today.
Maybe it’s because of the nice spring weather reminding me how we would spend our time outside on days like this. But because I miss him, I will tell you a little story about my Toby.
Like most dogs, Toby loved stuffed animals. He loved carrying them around, chewing on them, throwing them up in the air, and ultimately ripping them up.
This was about 11 years ago, but my brother, who was about 5 at the time, had this stuffed shark on his bed named Mike and Toby had been eyeing that thing up for days.
He would occasionally get it and we would take it from him and be like, “no this is Ethan’s Mike.
” After about a week of him stealing it from Ethan’s bed and us having to go through the whole process we gave up and just gave him Mike.
Toby LOVED Mike, more so than any other stuffed animal he’s ever had in his year and a half on this Earth.
Whenever he wouldn’t be carrying it we would say, “Toby where’s Mike?
Go get Mike!” and he would run off and come back with that little shark! He had Mike for a long time because he was surprisingly really gentle with it.
Well one day things got a little rough and Mike was no more (he was torn up in pieces and scattered around the living room.
I blame boredom because school had started back up and we weren’t with Toby as much during the day.).
So now that Mike was gone Toby moved on to the next toy, but we, my family and Toby, couldn’t let Mike go.
Because that toy was associated with the name Mike, all toys after were also called Mikes.
We would say, “Toby go get your Mike!” and he would run off and come back with a random toy, tail shaking and eyes proud. It became his thing.
Everyone knew about Toby and his Mikes, our friends, the vet, the pet sitter. This continued for the rest of his 12 years right up to the day he passed away. I really miss that guy.
So now we are waiting for our new puppy to be old enough to come home (We have about six more weeks) and our family all agreed that the new puppy’s toys will be called Mike.
We can’t untrain ourselves of an 11 year old habit and it’s a nice homage to our beloved and dearly missed Toby.
Now let me preface this by saying we never really dressed him up like this, there was a purpose.
There was like two feet of snow outside and we wanted him to be warm (and dry as possible), thus the leg warmers and the t-shirt.
But that’s not the point, the point is he always had a Mike with him or nearby. No Toby outfit was complete without a Mike!
