Our hearts pounded in synchronized laughter as we raced
through the city streets. We hopped from one train car to another planning our
lives together, planning our awkward entry into adulthood. Since the day I met
you, you were the guy with your arm crossing your body while puffing your
cigarette. I stood there quiet taking in the city night sky and taking in your
absolute chicness. You made a subtle joke that either no one had heard or no
one had understood but, I did. I let out a smart chuckle assuming no one would
notice but, you did. You looked at me and I smiled. I felt like you had picked
me, out of all the kiddies in the sandbox filled with vomit and broken glass; you
picked me. We talked and made jokes amongst the others and laughed
amongst ourselves. When the night ended and when you were finished with your
cigarette, it felt as if everything began to move. I do not know if it was us
moving faster than the noise of cars blaring their horns at one another or even
faster than the night turning into day, I just knew it was just us.As the second, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months went by;
we were the only kiddies in the sandbox. We made the broken glass into a
beautiful chandelier of dreams and we scooped up the vomit with our belligerent
tenacity to not be fucked with. We danced in the streets until the sun came up,
still high off of whatever we had, whether it was each other or other drugs. We
walked back to our beds and laughed deliriously about how exhausted our bodies
were. For you looked at me and I looked at you, no words only that
I knew I loved you and you loved me. I think about our sandbox, as our months have turned into
years and also as we have gotten older. I will think about our sandbox every
day for the rest of my life hoping that you still love me just as much as I
love you.
