The metal door is no obstacle for noises coming from the stairway. If I leave the interior doors open I can hear everything happening outside.
Sometimes I hear the elevator running and then stopping on my floor.
I hear its door opening with a metallic creaking of its springs and then loudly shuts as if someone’s weak hand failed to hold its weight. Then I hear footsteps coming closer.
Only a few, approaching my door. They stop there and, for a few seconds, there is only silence. As if someone is hesitating to ring the doorbell.
And during those few seconds – as crazy as it may sound – I hold my breath and I think “Maybe that’s you. Maybe you have come for me.”
