As mentioned in the post for Dad’s birthday, my brother would be in charge of Mom’s birthday. Every year we celebrate their birthdays in close succession.
Moreover, Mom’s birthday is such that it sometimes coincides exactly with Mother’s Day, like it did this year, I think, so it’s just two celebrations for the price of one.
Mom’s way more sensitive and particular about what she gets on her birthdays. She has some minimal expectations and demands.
For example, never get her a present that she doesn’t find useful and instead finds it to just take up space and is a waste of money.
She wants something from the heart and created with effort, so craft work is a good option sometimes.
As with past years, I had been checking with my brother during the days before what we could do together for Mom. This year, he said he would cook lunch.
But on the day itself, as my brother was getting ready to go on a grocery run, I don’t know if Mom just changed her mind or had a sudden craving (or just didn’t want to eat food we made, gosh).
She asked me to make a booking for the Boon Tong Kee Chicken Rice nearby. It was Mother’s Day too, so they were all booked out. Mom decided she really, really wanted to eat there.
Dad got there first to take a place on the waitlist, then we went in to have a good place with the a la carte dishes, basically everything, except chicken, and chicken rice.
You know, the actual things Boon Tong Kee is famous for? Um, what’s this all about, Mom?
Mom decided to visit the Sony service centre because her brand new phone from two weeks ago (on Dad’s birthday as mentioned earlier in that post) frequently had a frozen screen problem.
It’s only two weeks old! I asked the staff if they could replace the phone. They wanted to reset the software instead. I hope that works out.
I also wanted to attend a wake - my ex-manager’s mother-in-law had just passed away and I wanted to give her my concern and support. So I left early for the wake before the phone was back.
What an event death is.
My ex-manager’s family celebrated the life of her mother-in-law; my ex-manager was relatively upbeat trying to be looking up instead of being morose about it - a good attitude to have I guess.
I got home from that to dinner and guess what - my brother indeed got to cook! Just one broccoli dish though. But let me tell you. Wow. It was absolutely great. Spectacular.
The best broccoli dish I think I’ve ever had! It was perfect. Wow, amazing job, bro. I hope Mom was happy with that. The mission for Mom’s birthday went alright after all, I guess.
Mostly because I was a happy broccoli-muncher that evening.
