People who know me know I love butterflies. Not just

aesthetically, although that’s part of it – the intricate designs on their

wings; the balance they strike, in flight, between delicateness and total freedom.

When I got my first tattoo – a butterfly hovering over a vine, terribly

unoriginal and gauche, according to many unsolicited opinions aired over craft

whiskey cocktails and IPAs, because that is what you drink when you’re a 20-something

in New York City in 2014 – I asked the artist to make the wings look ornate. “Like

a stained-glass window.”I do like the look of butterflies. I adorn my body with

them: the tattoo, jewelry, printed fabric. I conjure them up in my space. A

light netting canopy fluttering down over my bed is pierced with glittery,

dollar-store butterfly pins meant to mark place settings at a baby shower. A

paper lantern printed with colorful, textbook-style sketches of different

species of butterflies sits nestled underneath a grey-and-white scarf depicting

monarchs of all different sizes. I don’t surround myself this way just because

I like the look of them. Butterflies bring to mind cycles, the life cycle, that

single, thin, vague wisp of connectedness that is the only notion of immortality

to sit comfortably in my secular worldview. They bring to mind feminine

showmanship: showgirls, drag queens, little girls at dance recitals, painted

faces, bright colors, and graceful-yet-unorganized movement. They’re innocence

and infinity, all in an insect.
