First Night (Première soirée) by Arthur Rimbaud

by dinkysniff

She was less than scantily dressed,

And large tress blatantly

Pressed leaves against her window,

Curious, close, hard by.

There she sat, half-naked

In my big chair, hands clasped.

On the floor, her dainty little feet

Trembled with pure pleasure.

I watched wax-pale

Fugitive light play

On her breast and in her smile -

A fly on a rose.

I kissed her slender ankles.

She laughed, brutal and low

Little tumbles of brightness,

Laughter like a chandelier.

Small feet vanished

Beneath skirts. 'Now stop it!'

She scolded, her laugh saying

She'd not minded one little bit.

I kissed her eyes so gently,

A helpless tremble under my lips.

She threw her fine head back;

'Ah yes, that's nicer still!'

'Listen. I want to tell you...'

My mouth plunged to her breast; she said

Nothing; but again she laughed,

Frank laughter which said yes.

She was scantily dressed

And large trees blatantly

Pressed leaves against her window,

Curious, close, hard by.
