Skye watched the neighbourhood fly past out the car window, taking in the sight of happy families; parents home with their kids for the weekend and playing with pets.
She felt a ping of jealousy towards those kids. Why did they get to be safe at home while she doesn’t even know if she has a home for sure? Looking to the front of the SUV, Skye watched Mrs.
May-Coulson drive and Mr. Coulson sing to the old timey music on the radio.
They seemed nice, but a lot of the families who’d taken her in before were nice, too, and Skye always ended up being sent away by them.
This wouldn’t be any different, and she was set on not getting attached. She would not cry when they sent her away this time.
Melinda looked back at Skye in the rear view mirror, glaring out the window and kicking her feet in her booster seat.
She could practically hear Skye convincing herself they’d give her back up in no time at all. She glowered a bit about that, and decided to attempt a conversation with the girl.
