Everybody's Getting A Kitten For Christmas [Christmas 2016]

by Queenofscots

This year, Santa decided, everybody was just getting a kitten for Christmas. Or maybe a puppy.....

It would be the easiest Christmas ever, in some ways.....

And in some ways, the hardest.

Finding enough kittens would be easy....abandoned pets were everywhere.

He could even pick some up and distribute them as he went along his route, which was a good thing, as loading kittens would not be not easy, not even with his magic.

Not even when there were only three thousand or so children left on Earth to load presents for....

And toys were not necessary, not now.....toy stores had been mercilessly looted by the surviving children.

They'd needed *something* to console them, after the shock of the plague that had swept through in late summer.

All their parents were dead--every adult human on the planet had died in the space of less than a month.

So, of course, had many children, but that was largely from the plague's aftermath. Most children were immune to the actual virus.

But children, even intelligent children, had trouble surviving in a world with no electricity, no modern heating, no water and septic systems....

So, this would be a very basic Christmas--goodness knows, surviving cats and dogs were struggling, too. Kittens *needed* people, even children.

And children needed kittens. Or cats, or dogs....Santa would decide en route across the barren, devastated planet, how to pair up pets and children.....

Amy and Ellen Schumacher, six and ten, and entirely alone in Ephrata, PA, had narrowly escaped one burning house, trying to keep a fire going. They were terrified to try a fire again.

A pair of shaggy, friendly Newfoundlands, as well as two calico kittens, should both cheer and warm the girls Christmas morning...

To the small groups of children banded together in Los Angeles, he left grown cats, as fighting rats off the rotting food in stores was their main problem.

Many cats had been left locked helplessly to starve in their homes when their owners died drowning in their own phlegm and vomit...

they would be as delighted to have companionship and food as the children would be to have help fighting the now-vicious rodent population....

He flew over a dark, dead Asia and Russia, and on to Europe, where tiny Joey Brisbane, all of two years old, lay shivering and frightened--Joey's older sister had been taking care of him,

but she had died two days ago, of pnuemonia, exhaustion, and despair....

Solomon, a Golden Retriever who was nearly dead of despair after his own family--even the baby--had all died of the virus, would be perfect for Joey, and Joey would be perfect for Solomon.

Santa headed back to the North Pole, not sure if he felt better or worse. So many and so much completely gone! But perhaps he had done some good....

Perhaps it would make a difference, both in the animals lives, and the childrens'...

Perhaps things would eventually get better, in a few years....

He hoped so.
